I currently have 4 EBJD's got them all about the same time, but one of them has started to grow out his fins longer than the other ones. does anyone know why? the one on the right has the longer fins...

I have no idea but those are some beauties! I'm going to get two sometime next month when my tanks done cycling, I'm super excited :]

some people say its male with the longer fins and female with the shorter fins, but this is not always a sure fire bet as to whats what.

There is not an ounce of truth in the idea that pointy fins suggests gender with Blue Dempseys...

I have raised both male and female Blue Dempseys... and I have not foud my males to have pointier fins than my females...

I've also raised many standard Dempseys and do not find it to be true with them either. I did recently raise a brood of "Blue Gene" Dempseys and foudn my more dominant fish had pointier fins than the less dominant fish. This included my dominant females having far pointier fins than my sub dominant males...

The way fish evolve is they have many fish with a wide range of characteristics... Some characteristics prove valuable to survival so fish with these characteristics are much more likely to survive. You are simply seeing typical/common variations of characteristics...

no, actually he is the one who has been harassed the most. But i have noticed that his/her color is more vibrant than the others. i want to try venting them but am a bir reluctant because of how small they are. dont want to stress them out too much.

Venting prior to sexual maturity is quite difficult and often misleading as you will be viewing under developed parts...

Far more Blue Dempseys that survive to adulthood are males than females. I have no clue if there are more males born. But I have had a few turn out to be mature females...

In the past, it seems that long-finned EBJD's tend to not be as healthy as the regular finned JD's. Buts its just what was noticed between the two.

While I do believe there are lines of Blue Dempseys that have been line bred for long fins... and in the process of doing so inbreeding has been abused to the point the line has been excessively compromised...

I don't think it would be fair to believe that of a group of siblings, the ones with longer fins are weaker...

Instead I believe it would only be fair to believe that there is a variety of characteristics within a brood... including some fish with slightly longer fins...
