i was researching on the web and i saw that people think that a female dovii needs a bigger tank than a male managuense. they said the dovii needed a 125 and a male jag needs a 75g.:screwy:
also, why does a male umbee need such a big tank. i personaly think that they would be okay in a 200 like a male dovii needs.
and wat size tank does a female umbee need?
the information i researched was from google.

they are open water predators!

so they need a lot of open swimming space!

but a male jag needs more than a 75 more like a 125 i think

im not asking why open water predators need big tanks i'm asking why does a umbee need a bigger tank than a dovii:)

google is no substitue for self experience, i have kept more than 1 male jaguar and i'll tell you now, that there is no way your going to be able to keep a 15-16" active jaguar in a 75 gal, female dovii get abotu the same size so a 125 minimum is also needed, i speak mainly from a footprint size point of veiw, as in 6'x18" 125 gals, and 4'x18" 75 gals, male dovii's need a absoulute minimum footrpint of 6'x21", and more readily avalible are 6x24" or 180 gallons. i'm not possitive on how large female umbees get, but you can base your deiscion on there adult size, and active tendencies.

wat, do umbees get larger than dovii's in aquariums? or do they poop a lot more so more room iz needed?

i have seen very few umbee's in aquaria, and none that were at full potentially, so i can't say, though i have seen many a dovii at 20-22", but no larger. there are no posted rules for keeping fish, rather the ones the keeper puts in place. i honestly believe that an aquarist would be able to a umbee in a 72"x24" aquarium, i mean unless every single adult male unbee got to 30", and i have never seen one that large. it was the same way for dovii when i was entering the hobby, everywhere i looked it said they got to 30", 4 years into the hobby of parachromis one day i realized, i had seen many dovii keepers yet, not one captive raised dovii over 22".

thats wat i waz thinking. every person i ask will say a 300g iz the bare minimum for a umbee.:bs:i think that a umbee wuld be alright in the same size tank as a dovii. thanx xr for answering the Q.:)

Umbees are the most sensitive to water quality and require very clean waters. They also seem to be more sensitive to nitrates than many other cichlids. Alot of umbee owners do not realize this and probably why we do not see many full grown umbees. One more reason why they are prone to health problems may be due to the bloodline being siblings created from siblings for decades now.

Bigger tank, bigger buffer, bigger water changes, longer life. And as mentioned previously, they are open water predators.
