Hey, y'all, I was just wondering, out of curiosity, why do y'all like/love fishkeeping?

Here is my answer: I love fishkeeping because it allows me to express myself with living creatures. The fish I choose speak loads about myself and shows what I like and don't like. It's a living art having a fish tank; art represents who we are as a person in general, so like I said above, it's a way to express myself artistically.

I also love fishkeeping because it's therapeutic, and I don't know about you guys, but I have a lot of people in my life who are problematic and have a lot of stressful bull going on. Fish keeping is my way of escaping the chaos of regular life and focusing on something beautiful and admittedly stressful, but a good kind of stressful. Who doesn't find it therapeutic to watch beautiful fish in a tank swimming around? That's why they have fish tanks in hospitals and places where people are stressed because it's a bit of peacefulness in a hectic world.

Sorry for the long answer, lol. I would love to hear what everyone else thinks! :D

Therapeutic is a good word to describe fishkeeping. I find watching my fish is just as relaxing as watching the flames flicker and dance about in my wood burner. There's something mesmerising about them both.

Also, knowing that those fish rely solely on you for their survival gives you a great sense of achievement and accomplishment when all is going well.

And of course the main reason we all love fishkeeping is so we can come on here and take the mickey out of each other, lol.

Yeah, fire is also really therapeutic...maybe too therapeutic lol. Amen brother! That feeling of achievement and accomplishment when all is going well is the best feeling.

And yes, we come on here only to make fun of each other ;) LOL

I'm sure a lot of people will not agree, but...I find huge similarities and parallels between fish-keeping, hunting, fishing and birding. They're all just slighty different methods of engaging with nature. Birding is the most hands-off one in the bunch; you're an observer and take no part in the natural process. But the other three are interactive in the extreme. You are actively participating in the natural process of life; there is nothing that quite compares to this.

They are also very contemplative; one's mind can wander off along whatever pathways you choose, without worrying about the mundane BS of day-to-day life. The state of mind that can be achieved by sitting in a boat, a deerstand, or an armchair in front of an aquarium is IMHO the epitome of Zen.

I agree with many of Esox's comments and opinions, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say I agree with this one...just not too sure what it means...:)

Sorry, my bad. I should have realised by now that I should provide a manual for some of the odd things us Brits come out with, lol.

"Taking the Mickey" is just another way of saying take the piss!

There are a couple of versions as to how it came about but the one I go along with is that the "Mickey" part is taken from the word micturition, which basically means to urinate!

Anyone would think you'd be quite familiar with this going off how much micturition you take out of me on here, lol.

Yeah, I looked up what taking the mickey meant...it said to make fun of someone in not a nice way XD. So that's what I said, making fun of someone XD.

Honestly, i have no Fn idea why I like fish. Maybe I’m just predisposed. I like just about every fish (fresh and salt) invert, reptile, amphibian, insects n spiders and even many types of plants. I’ve always been like this.

Fish being easier to deal with than people is one reason. Another is you’re creating your own little world where you can make it just the way you want. I want to make a tiny ecosystem eventually in either a 125 or 180 with aquatic isopods.
