I see alot of ponds for rays. I can understand the volume of water needed for healthy rays and ponds are a cheaper way of doing that, but aren't you missing alot just watching them from the top? I have seen small rays in regular tanks and its awesome to watch them swim from the side. I haven't seen a ray in a pond so I can't really compare. I am thinking of getting a couple of rays and can't decide whether to build a regular pond or go to the trouble of building an in wall tank/pond with a window. Also has anyone ever had a ray bail out of their pond?

I think the main reason people choose ponds over tnaks is because of price. Its exensive to buy, feed, and house rays so saving a penny where ever you can helps alot of poor bastards like my self! My ray is small now so in a tank and I am still debating rather or not I want to build a pond or get a larger tank. I have seen rays in ponds and it is not too bad because they are good to view from above anyway as long as the water is still. I will just miss seeing her swim up and down the glass. Check out DWs rays in the classifieds they are kept in a pond and still look beautiful.

I believe some one here once posted a video of a leo climbing a good bit out its tank in order to eat from his owners hand so I suppose its possible if the water lever is too high for a ray to jump out. My retic use to hit the top of his tank when he would go up and down the glass.

Defintly the price is the biggest issue. A 300 gallon tank would cost a minimum of 1500 if bought from glasscages.com vs a 1000 gallon pond which you can dig in a day with a rental bobcat and lay down some pond liner and secure it in another. And that pond alone would cost around 500 not including the filter and all the other spiffy things that go in ponds.

I am going with a pond cause I can get a 300 gallon 5' rubbermaid tub for $204 after tax. If I went with a tank it would cost me about $1200 so that is why I am going with a pond. Plus by doing this I can save my money so I can get a tank in the future.

thanks for the replys. I will research more into a pond with a window and share what I find. I would like to have the best of both worlds.

i would go with the large tank all day long

the money you would save on an out door pond you would lose trying to heat it and setting up good diteration for it

When I build my own house it is going to have a room with a big pond on one side and then fish tanks on the other. I am thinking of hella insolating it and heating the room at 80 and heating the discus tanks and ray pond to 83 with heaters. As long as I dont loose to much heat from it escaping through a window it shouldnt cost more than trying to heat over 1000 gallons with electricity alone.

I've nearly finished building an indoor ray pond.
Reason I decided on a pond over a tank was because I made my basement into a fish room & there is no way I could get a 8 x 6 tank down there :)
