Comon MFKers, I wanna know why you have a hobby in this area or have an extensive obsession with pets!
Personally, I kept reptiles because... well... let look at the other options:
Cats/dogs/ferrets - basically, the "everybody" pet. My view is that they are the "family pets." There is no way to seperate them from other humans. Therefore, you can't control how they are treated or what they are being fed. Several of my dogs were abused because of this, unfortunately, I don't find out about the behaviour change until years later when I would stumble across the things that I don't use (work boots, rawhide gloves, leather gloves, etc) that initate their protective behaviour to occur. Last time, I got bitten by my dog because I happened to be wearing rawhide gloves; I found out that his former owner or one my friends used to slap him as a puppy with leather gloves for bad behaviours. How long did it take for this to show up? 8 years. No one in the household wore leather gloves around him until the day I decided that the lawn need a complete overhaul.
Fish - Depending on the type of fish. Some I have interest in, others I don't. I just look at them, feed them, let others do the maintance. However, now that I am informed that there are ways to simpify maintaince (other than sucking out of a siphon)
Birds - I hate birds. I love looking at them; taking care of them? No way. I am sensitive to their body odor. The second reason why I am not found of them is that my parents would let them fly around the house, and the house would reek of bird crap.
Small mammals - I love them, except for the mess they make. At least with a cat or ferret, you can litter train them. With a dog, there is the pooper scooper.
I find reptiles easy to look after, easy to clean. The only thing I am dissappointed with, but at the same time I appreciate them, is that people refuse to come near the specimen.
The only thing is that I need my reptiles to be relatively docile, as I am legally blind. The last thing I need is a nasty bite just because I touched them, without making out the fuzzy shape, while cleaning the cage, putting in food, and so on.
Of course, I am used to fish bites and fin gashes, I am used to them all the time while fishing.
Nothing you can do, but curse everything under the sun, then just go "THAT LUCKY **** GOT A PIECE OF ME!"
Now, tell us your reasons for keeping the pet of your choice.
