When I dose my tank with pH buffer my skimmer stops foaming for quite some time. Usually takes 12-24 hours for the foam production to rise to collection cup. I know these skimmers are sensitive to oils cause it will stop foaming for about 10 minutes when I stick my hands in the tank but I didnt think pH buffer had any oils in it that would affect the foam. Any body know why it might do this?

its not that the there are oils in the buffer, but rather that hard water does not support foam as well. what is likely happening is that when you add the buffer, the carbonate hardness goes up for a time and as such the water does not support foaming as well as it did prior to the addition.

one of the reasons that water is called 'hard' is that back in the days before laundry machines, water that was alkaline did not support a good lather.

it was 'hard' to get a lather, hence the term 'hard water'

crazy thing is that when it does return back to foaming, it seems to foam alot better then before I buffed the water. I dont understand :nilly:
