This has always made me wonder. :screwy: They sell so much chemical crap that "instantly cycles" a tank, I have to wonder why I have never seen one sell ESTABLISHED media? Pot Scrubbies, bio-balls etc... People sell SW live rock and live sand all the time.

If I owned an LFS, I would set up a pond with a large wet/dry sump and sell people cycled media. IMO I would rather pay $20 for media from a disease free/properly cycled tank I can watch them test the levels from than the same $20 for a bottle of "it could work". I have used cycled media from other tanks to set up new tanks quickly and never had a chemical product come close to the same results. I won't touch the chemicals for that very reason...

Have any of you ever seen a freshwater LFS do this?
Would you buy the cycled media if it were an LFS you trusted?

i was thinking about the same thing, or the bought some media just throw it in one of the tanks for a week and it should have a good start

That was something I wondered about as well. It is a simple and good idea....

when i set up a new tank i run a filter on a cycled tank for a month then use it on the new tank works for but this would be good for someone who has just seup their first tank

LFS job is not really to help the customer...LFS job is too make money from the customer. the customer thinks their being helped but really most the time they are getting ripped off. its sad but true. the only time u get ''real'' help is if u know the person personally or u beg them for help....lol.. but from all my LFS experience this is what ive seen: you got some teenager that doesn't know a fish from his *** giving u advice on what chemicals u should put in ur water. they also carry lil books so they know what the fish are and if they don't give the fish some retarded name they give it a mislabel name, which is even worse.

there's way to much money in chemicals for a LFS to go out of their way to supply us with used media. anyways some people are too stupid to even think of using it to begin with; this also goes for the LFS.

it is a great idea however!

thats a great idea....! The only reason I can think of they might not is space.... maybe they aren't creating a demand by selling all of the other stuff like stress zyme... BTW - Does it work...? I just put it in...

Great idea though...!! I will see my guy tomorrow and ask him...

The Reef in Indianapolis will sell their established media. Most other stores will squeeze out sponge filters into a bucket for you, but they might look at you like you're crazy:)

If an LFS don't sell it there's a market for it
