this is what i found..as a post on a different fish forum to a thread asking how many guppies would be ok for a 5.5 gallon tank........
"I know you aren't supposed to. But I have always had WAY more fish in my tanks than they say and have a LOW death rate. I currently have a 10 gallon tank with 2 hatchet fish, 1 blue balloon ram, 2 plecos, 5 tetras (3 of one breed, 1 of another, and 1 of a different yet breed), 1 frog and 1 bala shark. Standard HOB filter. I don't have any problems. So I would say watch things closely and 5 would work fine in a 5.5 gallon tank.
I do feed my pleco's cucumber/zuchinni and algea wafers because they keep the tank clean. I recently set up a 30 gallon and the bigger (standard) pleco is going to be going in it so I bought the smaller one that will get max of 3 or 4" for the 10 gallon. I'm sure I will catch flack about this from people on here lol but my tank is healthy."
