Allright,we used to vacation in the Bahamas each summer untill a few years ago when it was deemed that a passport would now be needed to leave the country.Since then,we have been going to Puerto Rico to vacation and visit family who live there. We are now planning a trip to the Bahamas this summer and are looking into getting our passports....I did not know that they put you through such a hassle to get these things. My wife went to get hers today and she was turned away because she was wearing a striped pullover sweater. She was told that only solid colored tops were acceptable for the picture. As much as the things cost, and there is no getting around paying if you want to travel, you should be able to wear whatever shirt or sweater you want.I'm still unclear about the purpose that passports serve.Security measure....it's not like they can't be faked or falsified like everything else. This is just a rant at the whole process but any comments or enlightenment is of course welcomed.

I can just add to it.

I have a passport and I keep it in a fire safe box in my home.

A few years ago, the on the 23rd of December I had to take the GRE and the day before the test, my wallet was stolen. I thought that since I practically had to prove which side of the bed I had been conceived on to get a pass port that I could use that for ID for the test....

Nope.

The wanted my drivers license, which had been stolen the night before. And they got to keep the $160 I paid for the test. Not only did the thief steal my credit cards, charge several thousands of dollars on them and prevent me from having a way to travel to my parents home for Christmas, they also prevented me from taking the GRE before the application dead line to grad school.

I couldn't believe a passport is good enough for international travel, but not good enough to take a test!!!!

Holy **** that sucks.

However, I believe a passport is a document that validates your OTHER documents and yourself as a person. Basically saying when [person a] gives the boarder guard there passport, all the documentation they ([person a]) hand over it is valid as well.

I believe there is also some political aspect of it, but I'm not 100% sure.

I would assume a passport would work in those situations where you need 2(two) sets of ID but not 1(one) since it is not a standard government issued card, its a book.

Sorry to hear about your troubles and that your passport was no help at all.

Most places a passport is as good as a license and birth certificate....They are real pricey now!!

passports are not easily faked. Most of them now has bio chip embedded too. Passports works as IDs in most countries. Passports helps countries record the foreigners that comes into their country. WIthout passports, there'll be tons of illegal immigrants.

Maybe things have changed since i got mine a few years ago but it was a speedy process. Filled out the application at the post office, picture at AAA. Sounds like the person who had a problem with shirt color was just a little uptight.

Yeah, passport rules are a bit of a PITA... i remember getting my Aussie passport there were a lot of rules with even the exact placement of where you head was on the photo etc...

For my China travel card, it was an even bigger PITA, long story short, they asked me for everything from birth certificates, to ID cards and other info just to get one... and to top it all off, you had to wear either a white or black top with a collar, which at first i didn't know...
