Why is AI research so limited in the West while Japan invests so much into it?

When you look into AI research you can see that almost all development in that area is done in Japan. Japan invests billions in that part of research each year. Both private funds and tax money is used to push our goal forward. The goal is to create an Ancilla (maid), an artificial intelligence that is capable of endless problemsolving and improving itself. We are already so advanced in that field that our space organisation JAXA uses AI in our rockets which can detect problems and solve it themself. NASA spacecrafts have none of that technology. American and European rockets just have sensors to detect problems and the ground team solves them.

If you look into the entire project you can see that it is seen very critical in western nations. Almost all of your scientists see it in a negative way and it is portrayed in your media almost always in a negative way. You see the rogue AI. We see the friendly Ancilla. Scientists like Michio Kaku believe Japan could reach mayor AI breakthroughs within the next decade.

If we can hold our leadership in that aspect for that time. If we are the first nation to create and activate such an AI, then our Nation would reach a level unmatched from any other. The posibillities are infinite in evry aspect. Both in civilian and military use. Such an Ancilla could create ground breaking solutions like quantum shielding, fusion and completly new science within a very short time.

That is such a wide field and i would like to hear your opinion about it. Do you see more risks or chances?
 
AI and Robotics have advanced immensely in the last decade. I think it is inevitable that such type of mechanism will, are already, susbtituting Man, increasingly.

I see a lot of opportunities ahead, in the field of medicine, also.

Have no firm ideas, in any case, whether, on the long run, it will be an overall good thing.
 
I'm normally a optimistic person. But there is a already worldwide job issues for humans with high unemployment. Taking jobs that humans do to me seems counter productive in that area. Let alone there are things AI can not do. Sometimes the human essence and gut feeling make better the what AI can do.

An AI is not suppossed to do jobs that humans do. An Ancilla can support you in your daily life. She can do anything. She can find solutions very fast, she is self-aware. She can invent new technologies on her own. In small scale she can be used in a device that you wear (like those google glasses). On a larger scale she can be used for the well being of our nation. Imagine we build a functional and self aware Ancilla - AI. Loyal to Japan and give her the task to get us full control over the world. You could not stop it or even fight back if your country has no own. She would have acess to evry data in your country and full control over evry system. She could shut down electricity, transfer cash from accounts and even use your own weapon systems against you. Since she would be self aware and has the capacity of billions of minds, she could not be stopped.

Something like Cortana in Halo or EDI in Mass Effect.

Your essentially proposing to start a world war using advanced tech in the hope that Japan wins....

This guy(OP) seemed kinda cool at first but now I'm starting to wonder about him.
 
I was just trying to say what such a system can do. It can do many things. It could make ground breaking advancements in medicine, engineering, physics.
It can support at any system. Imagine when it controls planes, ships or cars. It would basicly be that the plane has its own mind. It could react much better and faster in the case of an emergency.
The war example was a bad example. I´m against any form of war. I support peaceful progress.

That movie (Terminator) that you named is a good example for what i said. It shows only the risks but not the opportunities. I believe we should not be scared. As i said in Japan that entire idea is mostly seen in a very positive way and i think we need that in the future because our world gets more and more complex. I think any manned space mission to another planet is impossible without a functional AI.

USA is leading in developing new hardware and the hardwarepower doubles evry 18 months. We are leading in developing an AI. And we face a core-problem. The amount of calculations that silicium based chips can do is limited. And we almost reached that limit. What we need is a new concept of hardware. Based on Quantum calculations or light impulses. nd i believe such a new technology could be achieved if Japan and USA work together in that field. But unfortunately many in the USA and EU see more risks than opportunities.
