Hey everyone. My blue african is digging tunnels and holes eveywhere in my 60g. There is plenty of rocks and such i dont understand why he is digging so much. There is about 10 holes in the tank now and it's really disturbing and making my substrate quite ugly. Will he ever stop this? If not i think i have to get rid of him.

If that upsets you, you don't need cichlids. The digging is just something they do every species I've ever kept will dig to no end.

That's what they do.

i understand cichlids dig, i have a green terror as well and it seems she is just foraging, not litteraly scooping massive holes. The blue african is digging giant nest type holes though, everywhere they are about 4 inches wide these holes. the holes expose the glass on the bottom of the tank

If there is a female present he may be showing off for her. If there's not one present maybe he just likes to dig. My managuense will pile gravel in the corners almost to the surface and expose large areas of the tank bottom. Eh if you like them you live with it

about 99% of them all dig and some/MOST dig obsessivly. Have you ever had cichlids before? Its very much in their nature. Just because you make caves, tunnels, holes doesnt mean thats what they want to chose as their home or territory. Kinda like yourself. Several people may build houses, Apartments or whatever. BUT maybe you prefer something laid out differently then what youve been shown. You know what you want and you want it. Same for Cichlids. And I do mean about 99%. Your GT not digging may just be that 1% thats not. Right now ive got a Managuense, RTM, Festae, RD, and about 10 others in various tanks and they are all digging. CA/SA fish do it. But I also know African fish even more so. If you own Cichlids your going to have to prepare for this issue and either know its something your gonna live with or not do Cichlids.
