I just got a wide bar dat he's healthy and all except it shakes his head every so often. What causes this. My PH level is between 6.0 - 6.4 is this okay or do they require a hire PH?? My water temperature is about 79 - 80 and I change water every other week. I have more than enough filtration for the tank and aeration aswell what could be wrong. Once in a while I see he flick against the gravel; but I dont see any visible signs on the fish. I used "Quick Cure" which treats Ick, gasping for air, flicking against rocks, protozoan parasites, mild fluke outbreaks, costia, chilodonella, and trichodina. I've treated for 3 days now and am going to do a water change tomorrow; but the fish is still shaking its head and scraping against the gravel. What else can I do?????:nilly:

No visible signs of Ick just yet but started treatment.....Just in case

For now just keep the water changes up.

yeah that's all I've been doing; is this not natural for these fishes. I've read that it isnt but I dont know cause my waters damn near pristine constant water changes with some aquarium salt. temp about 80 ph level 6.0 - 6.4 lots of filtration running a magnum 350 pro, and a Rena filstar XP. Anyway thanks for the response.

I think you should look at parasites and gill flukes. They will cause head shaking and rubbing. Usually salt will help, but you may want to look for a good med to do the job. Just a thought.

Usually when my fish shart shaking their heads it's because I skipped a water change or two ;) I know you said your water's clean, but there has to be something they are not happy with. Did you check other water parameters besides pH ? Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates, metals in water? A friend of mine nearly lost her fish when the city decided to clean the main pipes with a copper additive of some sort...never assume the city water is clean.

I would go easy on the medications, I don't like that stuff...especially mixing meds like this. First find the problem then neutralize it.

Good luck!

datnoids and especially widebars are known for scratching themselves every so often..my widebar just scratches it self every once in a while..dats 1 of their behaviors..but i do not know about shaking of the head..that you need to do a little research..i also agree about using too much meds...i would find the problem first and den fix it..rather den trying out all sorts of meds to fix the problem..good luck

Thanks for all your respnses. It is really appreciated. My pulcher is still scratching every so often haven't seen a whole lot of head shaking anymore tho. So I hope things are better.
