Why is my JD that color?

Alright so i got this JD from petsmart a couple weeks ago and when i first got him he was filled with color. Now 3 weeks later after i compare pictures of him he has lost his dark black color and is now lighter. He is in a tank with light color sand, Could that affect him? He eats great so its most likely not sick.

i'd say its the substrate...i had a green terror do the same thing to me

JDs will do that to you i would just let him be, i got a JD from VRWC and it was almost pitch black in his tank, got him into my tank and it colored up really light like yours and would only darken when he was fighting or eating, now a month or little longer and maybe .5-1in in growth has passed and hes almost always the darker color now FINALLY but still gets light sometimes, i think its just showing their mood changes when they are young as he grows he should return to the darker color

Substrate. My GT did the same thing. Threw in a black substrate and now hes more colorful than ever before!

My jd does that on a regular basis, he evenchanges colors when my wife comes in the room.

That first pic clearly shows fright coloration.
