I have 2 oscars and only one is having these symptoms. He swims around like normal, but his appetite has been smaller lately. His lips look swollen and he takes large breaths through his gills. It looks like he is gasping to me, but I dont know any other way to describe it. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now. He does eat, but not as much as usual. The temp in the tank goes from 72-74 and I have not tested the water. I siphoned the tank as usual about 4 days ago, and I did a 15% water change. Should I go buy some medicine?

Not enough oxygen or maybe too much ammonia in the water. It probably is a problem you can fix without meds

Agreed. Water changes do wonders. I would definately test your water. It will tell you a lot if you know what your water is like.

You shouldn't buy medicine, you should buy test kits.

What is the best way to add oxygen? That was my original idea. For the past few months I have had no airstone in there, but I added one 3 days ago to see if it would clear up. Ill do another water change tomorrow. I gotta get this guy better. He will be moving this month.

I haven't kept Oscars for years, but seem to remember that they like high O2. Strong surface current helps to - see if you can play with the return of your filter(s).

How big is the tank?

I second that.

Mine were actually gasping too before i added a power head to the tank they were in.
The more surface agitation the better.

Good luck with it :)
