I'm doing research for a Salt Water aquarium on reef2reef and I see Biospira (a SW bacteria for sale) being mentioned a lot with people positively reviewing it each time. Bio spira seems to be much more reliable than the FW bacteria for sale like Seachem Stability among others.

Essentially most of these products are concentrated nitrifying bacteria kept dormant in a low pH solution. Once put in the tank they spring to life and start settling down or reproducing. That's as far as I know, here we just have Seachem stability and a few local products. I don't know what would give one a significant edge over another.

Seachem Stability worked well for me in the past when I had a tank crash while medicating, but I used double the manufacturers recommended dosage.

It seems to vary based on how it's shipped.

Says who? I think some people are imagining things, as the bacteria in SS are in spore form. A lot of people seem to be confused on this issue, as many years ago the original Bio Spira had to be kept refrigerated, and shipped in dry ice when traveling long distances, such as across the US/Canada border. That was a long time ago, I see that the new formula no longer requires refrigeration, and neither does Stability.

Why does Stability™ not need refrigeration? If there's living bacteria in the solution, how do they stay alive for so long? Or is there something else besides bacteria in the product altogether?

A: The bacteria in Stability™ are alive but not active. They exist in a spore form. They can withstand extreme temperatures and do not require food to survive. When you add them to your aquarium they become active due to dilution.

The bacteria that require refrigeration are active. Refrigerating them slows down their life cycle and they require less food when cold. Because they are active they do require food, and that is packaged with them. They also will not survive extreme heat or cold and will die when they run out of food.
