Why is this book so expensive?

Because it is out of print and people are marking it up to ludicrous prices?

I sometimes order out of print cichlid books from the UK or europe. For whatever reason, some books are in greater supply there.

There's also another one for $39: same author, same title, but apparently published 4 years earlier. Probably an earlier edition.

It might have been updated in the later one in some important way, or actually be the exact same book with a new cover. Who knows?

Looks like the earlier edition that can be had for around $40. It's obviously hard to tell from a cover what the edition is unless one knows all the editions, although the inside of the book will identify if it's a different edition or not.

But yes, a large book with numerous color plates is going to be expensive partly because it's far more costly to make, ship, and store, and partly because the runs are typically very limited. Setup costs which are always significant and would be larger for books like this, are distributed across a small number of books (some as low as 5,000, 10,000 or such, as compared to paperbacks that might have runs of a million.)

The problem on Ebay, Amazon, etc. is that limited editions start off rare, and start off costly, and the people who bought them are unlikely to want to part with them. As a result the small supply that actually enters the book sellers inventory (from over production, estate sales, moving sales, close outs), becomes a costly item that will lead to a high asking price.
