Why is Warhammer 40k so expensive???

A long time ago, I bought a starter kit, but I lost most of the stuff and I want to start collecting warhammer 40k, it looks pretty cool. But why is it so dang expensive? I mean, it isn't even pre assembled or painted...

I saw people playing it at a card shop a few months ago. It looked awesome. I really wanted to get into it but the prices were actually what dissuaded me. I don't mind painting and assembling, but its outrageous what they charge for pieces of plastic.

Yup, just how I feel. I mean, it must be very hard to paint, but I don't mind that as much; it's just so darn expensive! Also, if you mess up on painting something, there goes your money...I hope there is somewhere that maybe sells it a bit cheap?
Anyway, those tyranids look awesome.
 
Yeah the game is fun, but when the army i wanted cost $400, I decided to get another tank instead.
 
it's basiclly a really complicated chess game, i knew a guy who played, problby spent 1000 in 2 months on it.
 
About 4 years ago I did a bit of Warhammer myself. Probable dropped about $1,500 on it. Had a big army of Imperial Guard Catachan fighters, and a smaller one of Space Marines and Tyranids. Sold it all to a kid and his parents for about $1,200 so did not lose much money.
