its newly bought, maybe due to the new environment, new fish tend to stay in shadow. this tiger shovelnose has already eaten, but just little, i feed it fish, but it never goes after those fish but instead wait till they are in front of its mouth, and they 'may' eat it. so i think its kinda strange as i think they are active during daytime, it lives in a community tank, it just stay all the time in shadow and not really moving, and wait till completely dark and come out and swim a bit, does anyone know the case and suggest any problems arising?

I just got one about 3 weeks ago. When I first got him, he never really moved around a lot, and just ate at night. He was just under 4 inch. Now he is almost 6, and hides out of the light during the day which before he was just chilling in a corner, but I have a tigrinus shovelnose that is around 9 or 10 inches. He comes out all the time and swims around, and before you guys say it's cuz one is so much bigger than the other is why he hides they are in different tank. I would just say give it some time when he gets a little bigger and more sure of himself he will move around more. That's what mine have done so far... goodluck

Size is a major reason it hides! As small babies, they are prey and would likely get eaten. As they get older and larger, they become so massive, there is little that can bother them. As many catfish are, these guys are very active at night. They adjust to being more active during the day when you feed during the day. A catfish will go look for food, but laying in wait for his food is totally normal. If it comes to you, why chase it and expend energy?

On another note, feeder fish are one of the worst things you can feed your fish. Because of the way feeder fish are raised and handled, they are very prone to carrying diseases, even if they aren't showing signs. From internal parasites to ich to just poor nutrition, feeders are definitely something to stay away from. Have you tried blood worms or pellets?

Also, I hope you are prepared for the insane growth rate on these guys. If you wake up and think he's bigger, its because he is. My TSN is 2 years old and 31"+. She also is the most guilty fish I've every owned stuffing things in her mouth that you would swear shouldn't fit, and sometimes fish that don't. She killed my 18"+ ID when she was 24", even though she could only fit the head in her mouth and suffocate it. I love her, but you just have to know what you're dealing with or you're gonna be pissed and shocked.

It sounds like your TSN is currently very healthy and normal.

yeah i know that they are eager eaters..
its lives with a gar marble pim 2 knife fish,
and the gar is the biggest, its is just an inch shorter than the gar.

indeed, today i saw it swim out a bit when lights on, not in a hurry but normal way, but just for a short period of time, im quite glad to see that :) it looks so beautiful. maybe the many room mates have given it pressure, that happened to my knife fish be4, but after like 1-2months, they become active when lights on =]

uve mentioned feeding worm, but im afraid the hungry marble pim just ate it well be4 the shovelnose become curious ~_~ they stay all the time together...

Spread the worms out so it gives the TSN some time. Also, know that the TSN will outgrow the knife fish and gars rapidly, and, while I don't gamble, I'd place money they will be TSN dinner within a couple months. :WHOA: My brother saved my knife fish from my TSNxRTC who had that poor little guy sucked down like a fruit roll-up even though they were the same length.

i agree that active at night is normal, but i dont know why it ate so little, there are always some feeder fish in front of it and i know its hungry, but it may only eat 1or2 and stop and stay.
the reason why i do not try bloodworms are even worse then feeder fish, i think they are breed from animal waste... but whenever i put in feeder fish, i will put in some antiseptic, and also i will do it in small dose once or twice a week... so i think this will be safer..

sure i know it can grows so big, the problem i am worrying is that if it has any problem right now that can lead it to death...

haha its true, but i wanna know if giving less food will lower its growth rate? though i would love to feed them so often...

however, im planning to make a catfish tank....so up to a certain point they will be moved into new home !

one thing i think i need to add is that, my marble pim is smaller than the TSN,
but whenever there is feeding time, it just go crazy and finding food, for all other time, it just rest under shadow, this makes me thinking about why the TSN dont go for food... as i know marble pim is much less active than TSN

Feeding them less really doesn't work. If they are hungry they will find food like ur other fish. I'm not sure how u are keeping them currently but a "catfish" tank would be q good idea. Though to house him for life you will need at least a 600-800gal tank minimum. I keep all my cats in a indoor pond. It's just more economical
