i dont understand if most of the fish we keep in this hobby are predators and eat mostly baitfish in the wild then why is the most natural food available (feeders) so frowned upon and "bad" for the fish???
please keep this a discussion not a flaming guys
i want to know the real reason, real reasons not just "they are bad"
if they actually are bad then why are the fish in the wild just fine?

A lot of feeders carry disease because of poor conditions at lfs also goldfish are a very fatty fish and aren't a natural baitfish to most of the fish that we as fishkeepers have.

ok so if you know they are kept very well and healthy they are fine?
n so what is another large feeder that would be not as fatty and healthy?

because most of the time they are disease infested and very sickly. just look at the conditions they are transported/kept in. live food is the best source of food IMO, provided you have a clean source of feeder fish. set up some convict breeding tanks, instant and free fish food :)

goldfish are no more natural than the processed fish foods we give our fish anyways, so whats the problem? predatory fish dont eat market prawns in the wild. they dont eat pellets. they dont eat beef heart, or other types of seafood. they eat other fish most of the time. so goldfish would be the most natural food for them.

Exactly--I had two convicts in a 20 gallon and fed the babies to my Piranha's.

What kind of wild predator fish discussed on this forum has a diet that consists mainly of sickly goldfish?

Oh wait...
and what kind of wild predator has pellets that magically fall out of the sky 3x times a day?

^ Agreed. Most feeders at lfs arent really taken care of very well and can carry parasites or diseases. When ingested by your preds, the feeders can pass on whatever harmful things it may carry to your beloved fish!!!

Also, they carry no real nutritional value, again because of the fact that the feeders themselves arent being fed well or takan care of well.

Some agrue that they breed and raise their own feeders and keep them well fed to give to their preds.
