225 holes.jpgI I am in the process of purchasing a 225 gallon aquarium that is brand new, but being bought second hand. It is predrilled for sumps etc, but there seems to be way too many holes. There are a total of ten holes and two overflows. Each overflow has a hole that measures 2.25" across. there are also two more the same size located on the bottom beween the two overflows. There are four smaller (return?) holes on the bottom of the tank at the FRONT. The last two are also the smaller size located on the BACK WALL between the two overflows. The tank comes with a new 50 gallon for use as a sump filter. My intention is to use this tank for freshwater fish such as Polypterus and maybe a Black Ghost knife etc. So could anyone please tell me what all the extra holes are for? And should I just silicone some appropriate sized glass over the holes that I don't intend to use? Thank you in advance for any input. Also, don't be afraid to tell me to run away as fast as I can if this seems like a crazy tank to buy.

+1 was probably intended to be a reef tank. If the price is right i would not be turned away. Ive ran plenty tanks with bulkheads in tank floors capped with pvc up to 500g with no issues. There is always the “fear” of one failing but tank seams can fail over time just the same. With good bulkheads theres not much worry IMO. Can also silicone glass patches over the holes if you want a more permanent solution to not use them.

Thank you for that info, and yes it was apparently originally planned to be a reef tank. I think the price is right, especially with how Aquarium prices are skyrocketting here in Canada. I'm getting the tank, which is a Eurobraced style 225, metal stand, 50 gallon sump tank and 4x 6' long ReefBrite LED light strips for $2000 canadian. Currently a Petsmart Topfin 125 gallon tank and stand are listing here at $999. The tank alone has a list price of $2900, and that was before the latest price jump. If the lighting strips are not appropriate for freshwater plants, then I may be able to recoup some of my cost from them. I am going to take my time setting it up and will have many more questions.. hopefully I post them in the appropriate forum in the future. :)
