i find arowanas to have the most confusing information for a fish..

in the wild it is said the silver aros eat birds and fish as their staple amazonian diet. yet in the tank world people say not to feed them either of these things and suggest foods that couldn't be farther from the aro's natural food element evolved for it over the millennia.

droop eye is caused by the arowana looking down too much from learning that food sinks to the aquarium floor, though the fish is naturally designed only to look forward and up for its food at the surface... a strange disorder but understandable and in theory, just keeping its head up for food sources would prevent such a defect.

sometimes i wonder if even i fed my arowana its natural live fish and birds from the amazon that id still get yelled at by forum members telling me how unhealthy it is and that every food should come in a frozen cube to be natural eh?...

whats the deal?

For 1 thing, feeding your Aro birds really messes up your water, there is nothing wrong with feeding it fish(just make sure the feeders are "clean")in thier habitat there is thousands and thousands gallons of water that they live in,in our aquaria we cannot come even close to that so we have to be careful what we feed our fish for fear of polluting our water and killing our Aro's,just my 2 cents.

1. Show me some evidence of an arowana eating a bird, I've only ever seen them eat insects.

2. Show me some evidence that its caused by looking down for food, because AFAIK no one really knows what causes it.

arows dont get DE looking down,my arows look down at the bichirs 24/7 nothing happens

:iagree: likely many factors contribute to DE and many are discussed in that thread.

Again :iagree: Though I'm sure the occasional "bird" becomes food for silvers in the amazon, I would doubt if it is with any regularity. From what I've been able to find looks as if insects, small reptiles, amphibians along with fish would make up the majority of the arowanas diet.

Either way you can try to simulate the wild aros diet, but because of lack of resources I would believe you will fall way short in nutritional value.
