So my sister came down to check her guinea pigs which are like 2 feet away from the tank. The tank is a 120 high i think its 6ft x 1.5ft x 2ft or something idk to lazy to go down. She looks at the fishes then goes and turns off the light. She says that about a mintue or two she hears a big splash and hears something fall. She rushes back to the tank and she saw the fish. She calls me up and i come home and pick it up and acclimate it back to the tank for a couple minutes.

So the question is why did it jump out of the tank?

Tank: 125 high 6ft x 1.5ft x 2ft (i think ill get dimensions later)

Inhabitatnts:

Geophagus Tapajios sp "tapajios read heads" x5

Geophagus Surinamensis x5 i think

Angelfish x2 big ones x3 smaller ones (big ones height is about 5in) (small is 2 in)

Emperor Tetras x2

Clown loaches x5

congo tetras x3

some other congo tetra (it looks more streamlined) x2

synodontis petricolas x5 (i think not to sure they are hiding often)

albino bushy nose pleco (female) x1

Kigoma frontosa x1 (yes i know the frontosa's water params are not like the loaches or any of the fish but i had no where else to put it and he seems to do fine)

Filtration:

Eheim Classic 2217

Rena xp3

Koralia 4 (if it counts?)

Decor:

manzanita piled to look like manzanita roots on the left side

manzanita just dropped into the tank on the right so it jsut looks like a pile of sticks in water

echinodorus marble queen x2 in clay pots with river rocks covering substrate so fishes dont disturb the substrate.

ADA amazonia in pots and some that fell out into tank from first attempt. (FAIL)

BTW the pots kind of are in the middle and leave a little gap so that the koralia pushes water through the back and hits the intakes of the eheim and the rena xp3.

Also tank has been running for about 3~5 months. Maybe ill get water paramas later

thanks for reading and helping out!

Fish frequently stress after lights are turned off and there's movement near the tank. I highly recommend lids.

You don't need to re-acclimate a fish after you take it out, hopefully it's fine but you should have just reintroduced it immediately.

He wasn't specific as to which geo jumped but I guess that is besides the point... since he's asking why one would...

Any fish can jump, any fish. No reason needed. Yours hit the floor because the lid wasn't on the tank. I'm one of those people who cover even the tiniest holes in the lids. I secure each tank like it's a crayfish tank. Yet even I had a fish jump. My cat leaped up on top of the tank and crashed the lid down into the tank. I found my 8" Green Terror that night laying behind the tank.

Sometimes they freak out when the light goes off. A simple answer for a giant post lol.

I've had fish who would've ended up in the floor just from jumping due to another fish chasing it (they were cichlids in these cases), and I've had them smack the glass in a way that lets you know that without the glass, the fish would be on the floor

(Front section is obviously covered by another lid)

Got to love the multi-purpose nature of GutterGuard, stops leaves from getting into gutters, works well as a submersible media, and fantastic for jump-proofing tanks.
