Firstly, wow it's been a long time since I posted on here! The past year have not been good for my aquarium addiction.... Full time college and full time work don't go very well together lol but I finally got enough time off from work to reevaluate things in my life and you better believe my aquariums are staying lol anyway! I started a worm box last year and I made a thread about it, which I can't find. This is going to just be my follow up thread, trying to get other people to go green, compost their veggie waste, and gather huge amounts of protein filled worms for their fish!! Makes me feel better about driving an xtera already lol anyway pics will be coming soon and I'll keep doing updates! This might be fun

Good idea, I had one with red worms a few years ago for fishing bait and tank food

I've got red wigglers as well they're the ideal worm for a vermiculite. I'm actually surprised how large mine have actually gotten lately, just been adding a lot of food lol

Definitely interested in doing something like this, look forward to your updates

Thanks man :) I'm planning on building a bigger box that's twice as long as the one I've got now so stay tuned!!

On a side note, I love being self sufficient and consuming as little energy as possible. That's why I've got this going and Ive got marbled cray fish ordered, and planted tanks with cherry shrimp to feed to my fish. Each system is independent, but works off the other one :) for instance I'm gonna feed the cray fish worms, feed my fish worms, cray fish, and cherry shrimp, and have pothos growing I'm my 180 and trim that so that I'm literally converting fish poop into plant matter and then the worm will eat the plant matter, and turn it into protein :) Plant matter > worms > fish/ crayfish food > poop > plant matter

Hopefully there won't be any problems with the pictures, I'm adding them from my phone. So first pic: the whole system. It's just two plastic boxes, one in the other, the bottom one has spacers to keep the top one elevated a bit to collect run off drainage, top box houses worms and has holes drilled on the lid for air flow , top of the sides for additional air, and holes on the bottom to drain the fluids

I used a vermiculture and it was pretty awesome. I accidentally flooded the bin and killed them all. My fish got depressed when I stopped feeding them red wigglers.

These two pics show the inside of the box, you can't see many worms because they're mostly right below the top layer of news paper and they like to inhabit the top 1-3" of soils. I put in food scraps the other night so they haven't yet processed enough of it to be seen from the top. I'll refrain from adding more waste as to get a better picture and let them work the food down because I'm running out of space in this box lol gotta change it out soon.... Once it gets warm outside!! I'll be building a new box shortly as well.

General rule of thumb for what to feed the worms: nothing acidic. No pineapple, onions, citrus, garlic, etc. no fatty foods as well (from what research I've done. Not claiming to be an expert, just sharing what has been working for me)

Good stuff: news paper, saw dust, grass clippings, leaves during fall, leafy greens, celery, apples, fruit, moist stuff, etc.

Great stuff: melons. I work at a farmers market during the summer and have brought home watermelon during the summer, some of which was forgotten about in the fridge. So I just threw the whole melon in after slicing it in half and the worms loved it. Figured cuz it's mostly water lol also really like cantaloupe rinds and just melon rinds in general.

Don't think the pics uploaded in the previous post. Added the last pic of two dried up worms that made it out of the box lol they're the first I've found in the year that I've had the box going

I culture red wigglers I feed chicken feed, squash zucchini lettuce and I'm going.to try some old mushrooms in the fridge. They do not like potatoes!
