elk river mn
looking for ideas to build a 5'x6'x 16"-18" tank , thinking glass
would also be looking for a trustworthy company to buy the cut glass from close to MN

gonna be freshwater african cichlids and catfish and heavily planted

Sounds gnarly! I hope you get the answers you are looking for. Let us know what you find! I may just have to start a new project!:D

Wow, those really are crazy dimensions. Were you planning on doing a plywood build or an all glass?

all glass, kind of had the idea of it being rimless with a tic tac toe shaped stainless or aluminum round stock top bracing bolted thru glass with flat plate around top edge

Another thought , has anyone ever tried using UHMW as a bottom plate 1" thick and oversized by a couple inches past walls and router a receiver groove into it for the walls to drop into

I would stick with pure glass we have a 4x4x20 tank and it make an awsome show tank. A tank like this give the illusion the fish have way more room but the down side is trying to catch fish. I wish our tank was a little taller though as I think it would seem even more natural to the fish depending where they live in the body of water. Make sure you get thick enough glass and brace the top enough for some helpful hints you could try phoning Bow Valley Aquarium in Calgary Alberta Canada they build alot of custom tanks.

what is the thickness of the walls on that tank?
what kind of top bracing does it have?
could you post a pic of it?

As for your size glass has a standard 4x8 size so working with full sheets you will get a better deal on glass due to less wasted material. So a 8x4x2 would use 2 1/2 sheets and the last 1/2 sheet could be cut for bracing.
