Has anyone ever tried to cut larger openings in a cheapo petsmart style cabinet? I need wider doors to be able to get the other fx6 in. Would there be a better chance of the stand failing than it working out? I need about 1-1.5".

If you look at the back of some large aquarium stands, all there is is a center brace in the middle, so widening the doors should be no problem.

Yea the back of mine has a panel with 2 large cutouts on each end with a 6-8" of material left in the middle. My first fx5 went in the back opening before the tank was filled. I'm trying to avoid draining and moving it to get the fx6 in. I've already found replacement doors.

Personally I wod just brace the inside with 2x4s all the way around and cut the center braces out. They are there for a reason or they wouldn't have designed the stand that way

Im not planning to remove any major support. Just removing about 1.5" from 2 of the door openings. I've thought about framing the inside, but if I were to do that I might as well build a new stand with larger doors.
