Wierd

i got some hrp fry about 3 to 4 months ago. know i have all differnet sizes and the biggest one is the boss of the tank and he is about 1 3/4 to 2 in. it looks like i have like 3 small females that are about a inch and 3 larger females about a inch and a half or so. the last couple days i have seen the boss and one of the smaller females start to protect a rock and would not let any fish near it. my question is y would the male pick a smaller female and not was of the larger ones. also by the person who i bought the fry from he said that they wont start breeding or showing and intrest in eachother until they are aroung 2 to 3 inchs. well i think he might be wrong. the female usually stays in the rock so i dont know if she has any eggs in there. my lfs said that i should have some eggs in the next few weeks but i think they are too young. am i wrong or not
