Mine (usually upon hearing what sort of tank sizes would be needed for some of the fish I'd like to keep...or upon hearing what sort of extra care may need to be taken in any situation) will often tell me that she'll just kill the fish.
At first I think she was serious, the 'fish are just dumb animals' viewpoint. That fish don't really stand up to cats or dogs as pets. Now she just uses it as a joke because she knows its a button of mine, but she's come around and wouldn't ACTUALLY do anything like that.

when my mother comes over to visit, she was always commenting on how big and tasty my Oscar looked.
i gotta admit , big fish are delish ! anyways my old lady always tries to player hate a new fish at first , but when she gets some nice eye contact , the puppy dog food-beg , or a pleco-wink , she falls in love
The biggest reaction I get is from my FH in the living room. It is usually something about how big, awesome, or ugly he is. Kids really like him b/c he will pop up out of the water to get floating food.
everyone I ever try ti get to feed/care for my fish says they'll end up killing my fish or something along those lines... :/
