Hey everyone,

Just got back from a surf trip from Puerto Rico. I love fishing and wanted to try a few spots so I brought a rod. On the way to go fish a waterfall I stumbled across what appeared to be an old fish farm. I threw lines and a mini spinner and ended up catching a bunch of tilapia and some kind of other cichlid that I can't ID. ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1362830850.316325.jpg

So, Anyone know this fish?

Thanks,
Cray

Looks like tilapia mariae

I really know zilch :(

Tilapia were purposefully introduced along with other fish decades ago.
I have heard of managuense being caught in rivers.
And it is thought that years before introductions, PR may have had its own endemic cichlids (Nandopsis) that were driven to extinction by the introduced species.

Sounds about right. I know cuba and the DR/Haiti has some endemic cichlids, I would expect PR to have one too. The pond I fished was totally abandoned, and didn't appear to be easily connected to a river system, but one was about 100 meters away down a hill, so escapes were possible.

I really wanted to fish the big lake in the middle of PR, but I spent most of the time surfing haha
