So my local LFS has a Silver Aro, about 8-10" that was labeled as "Wild Caught" silver aro. I noticed that its fins were more yellow than the tank raised ones that the store had in another tank. The barbels also appeared to be pretty long. The LFS is charging a premium for it, which is about double what a normal silver cost.

Is there any way to distinguish the difference or to verify this claim? I would hate to pay twice as much for a tank raised silver - that the LFS decided to label "wild caught". lol.

I would' say here is a way..sometimes tank raised are weaker and have minor "defects"...but only in extreme cases would I ( am not saying other swon't ) be sure..

Careful. There can be small variants of any fish, especially tank raised, and if they get one of them an LFS will always beef it up as a "special fish" and charge a premium for it. If you are in to variants go for it. It could be wild caught, who knows. If possible smuggle a camera into the LFS and post a pic before you buy. Then people can tell you better info.

Gotcha. yeah. I'll swing by the LFS tomorrow and see if its still there so that I can snap a pic or two. For the price, I'll likely just save a little more and get myself a black aro. lol.

I guess the big selling point was the "reduced" chance of drop eye- as some theories have indicated drop eye was is a result of poor genetics of the farm bred and raisd varients. Then again, I've heard other things like fatty diets and bare bottom tanks as reasons sited for drop eye as well, so who knows.

I'd save for the black!:D No droop eye there...and it IS a special fish...not just another claim either way!:headbang2
