somewhere close to you...
Is there a big difference with wild caught RBP's?

My LFS hooked me up and gave me a one eye RBP...its about 3.5-4in long...

Looks real nice bright red belly and dark grey on top...

Looks like its in good shape...just looks creepy with one eye.....I think that fool is a tough SOB since he had to of maned up with only one eye... ;p

Either way my LFS guy told me these particular P's he had ordered where caught in the wild...not sure what characteristics they may or may not have since they are from the wild...?

Any ideas?

I attached a picture...of....I don't have a name for him/her? what about Kano (mortal kombat) or Red beard...lol

whom ever suggests the best name I'll name it that...lol (for reals!)

Oh yeah does anyone know how you can tell what a Male and Female look like?

you can't tell piranhas males from females without slicing them open or seeing them spawn.

wild reds tend to have more streamline bodies (exactly like kano there, haha), more vivid red and be more aggressive from my understanding. i know jp has had some in the past.

Differences - Price tag for the most part, more or less a sales gimmick to mark up the price IMO. I'd bet there are plenty of Piranha's collected in SA on the market not listed as "wild caught" esp. Juvi's. IMO the only "wild caught" Piranha commanding a higher price tag would be large adults and hopefully they were treated for parasites during the shipping process.
Paying top dollar for a 1 eyed Piranha is risky bussiness IMO, 2 reasons, first Fish missing an eye can be symptomatic of Fish TB which is very much contagious to humans, although rare esp. with Piranha, the possibility exsists. Second, the more obvious, introducing a Piranha w/ 1 eye to an established shoal might turn out poorly in the end as the old shoal may perseve the missing eye as deficient and remove the weak link from their midst.
As for sexing- the only real sure fire way is thru "venting", exposing the fishes sexual organ, however this too can be risky business with Piranha as they have razor sharp teeth. Venting can be and is performed while the fish is very much alive.

With that being said - Best of Luck.

i assumed hooked me up meant he got them free but i'm positive if they're true wild reds they're not a gimmick.

i'm also positive piranhas are not sexually dimorphic. Sure females have a lil bulge in the middle but in the home aquarium that could just as easily be a piranha that's eaten more then the next. i know there's a breeder on here that has an eye for trying to guess what they are from the pics but he's solely basing that on the thickness between one piranha to the next

here's a quote from opefe.com, great great piranha website

Presently, the only piranha species known to be sexually dimorphic (external sexual characteristics) is Pygopristis denticulata, the anal fin is bi-lobed.

here's a link about sexing piranhas click here

Well good looking out ballin...and yes I got kano for free...

He seems to be doing well with the shoal...and is already eating as well, so I'm crossing my fingers that everything ends up well...

I'll keep you guys posted on Kano's adventure...

Wild cought are called "SUPPER REDS" AND there is No diff between but $$ I would thaink a wild cought would be much more skiddish being it come from dark murky water to **** im in a tank ....

Captive bred rbp can be made streamlined also by providing enough current while growing. & rbp can be sexed without spawning its not 100% accurate 100% of the time(there's always an exception)but its close enough to match some pairs together if you know what your looking for.
