The only cichla that interest me are Orinos and Kelberi, and i know i can't afford Kelberi right now, so i want to get me some Orinos to grow out in a 225 for some time.

As i'm sure all of you know, Rapps has some Wild Orinos and at a great price and shipping is next to nothing here, so i want to get some.

But i'd like to know if they would thrive at that size 1.5-2" in our hard water. It is 8.0 pH and is between "hard" and "very hard" on my test kit scale. Would these babies do well?

If not, are Orinos being captive bred anywhere that i could get some?

Thanks,

Will

So you have high PH,I dont know how they will fare in such water but not too long ago there was a pretty lengthy discussion here on the subject of water ph and hardness, just search the titles in this subforum.I doubt if anyone is breeding them just yet with any regularity but you can always adjust your water with softeners and ph buffers pretty easily.

It's kind of a different circumstance, and that thread was just a bunch of mis-information about driftwood softening water.

I was wondering about keeping the wild juvenile bass in my water, without messing with it.

I think i'm just going to go ahead and get some.

If it helps I've kept cichla in hard water and physically/health wise they've been fine. My ph is the same about 8.0

See if you can get an RO unit that should do the trick. If not see if you can get RO water from your LFS then slowly start to use your tap water until the fish are used to it. I know you don't want to buy those orino's and lose them. I still think bog wood is a good idea too. It will lower ph and that's got to be good for any SA cichlid.

That's good to know. They all had good colors and everything? Were any of them wild, or young when you got them?

I know R1Ridah has hard high pH water, and his cichla are some of the best i've seen.

That's a really good idea, i'll see if any of the LFS have any RO water.

Thanks.

All my tanks are stocked to the gills with driftwood.

I can get more though. My water's buffering capacity is crazy, so it won't make too much difference. Can't hurt though.

if thats the case...i'd let the experts chime in on this.
but i still say as long as the fish are acclimatised well, itll work.
