thanks! i purposely made the tank like that to create the "deep" setting as these fish are found pretty far down in lake tanganyika. i have a few other tanks setup the way you mentioned look good as well.
 
sorry for pulling up an old thread, but I also Keep Mikula. Nice group. Brian, Cyphotilapia (frontosa) come from as deep as 150 meters, depending on location. These fish specifically come from around 50 meters as best we can tell. Most responsible Cyphotilapia keepers try to reduce lights with actinic or 50 50 to match the blue hues of the deep where reds and yellows are filtered out. Many simply choose no lights other than a bit of natural light which is also good. Dark sand is easier on their eyes, since they have large eyes which reflect light to see better in the deep. White sand with bright light overwhelm them. Usually fronts in tanks with white sand and bright lights don't look too happy. White sand is fine if you keep the lights low though.

good info, i got this group from greg from little africa aquatics he pulled them from old world.
