Has anyone bought a small wild (2.5-3.5) and had them grow to a full 6 to 7 inches. I had a store owner tell me that it is very had to grow young wild discus.

Wild discus are supposed to be much more sensitive, nervous, shy etc. than tank breds, but no experience.

In my experience, wilds are no more shy or sensitive than any other discus. Just give them time to adjust and a proper environment, and they do fine. I have had to treat wilds for parasites. Common problems I've had were gill flukes and hex, but after treatment they seem as tough as any other.

You will find, once settled in, "healthy" wilds are more out-going than most domestics. It is true, that younger, smaller wilds do grow much slower than domestics, for whatever reason. Even my F1's from my wild pairs were ALWAYS slow growing, and the last to color up. If you buy small wilds, expect them to take a good while to grow and color up...Bill

what my LFS guy was getting at was that in the wild most all discus spawn at the same time and the discus at are smaller are also full grown just stunted. Right now I am looking at getting some heckels and i can not decide if I should spend the extra 30 a pice and get the larger size.

I say, with wilds, bigger is better. They grow kinda slow. I kinda doubt you wild get fresh caught wilds that were stunted, but you never know. I guess stranger things happen.

I have not had any experience with wild discus or but from what i understand thus far about dicus buy them as big as possible if you don't know what your doing.

I have about 4 juv right now im am struggling to get them to grow and to turn color. Despite daily water changes and many different types of food, these guys stay hidden and dark most of the day... don't know why! no parasites.
im thinking its cuz i have a bunch of different sizes in my tank from 1" to 4.5" no one in my tank is the same size as another, which is random i know!
