One of my relatives is from Columbia and everytime he comes back from his trips to his country he comes back with about 6-8 discus all about 6" or more. Discus ranging from Blood Pigeons at 9" to Royal Blues to Red turqouise. My question is how much are they worth??? They are all wild caught as well.

They are worth 60+ usaly 100+ and a royal blue 200+ they are hard to take care of i had a royal blue never at :(

Price varies on wild discus depending on quality, size and type just like with captive bred.

Also depends on supply and demand. The one place here that sells discus with any sort of regularity sells them for 200+ even though they arent great quality and they always sell. Small ones that havent even coloured fully sell for 50+. These are all tank bred and imported too, not even wild.

First problem is that the strains you listed are all domestic discus, which are not found in the wild. Second problem, is that these discus would have to clear customs, and your cousin would have to provide several documents along the way, including an import license.

your relatives brought the fish onto a plane? with no papers? and got through customs? lets see some pics of these IMPORTED fish.

Your cousin is either trying to sell you domestic fish or he is just gravely ill-informed. The royals might be wild--they are just a strain of Symphysodon aequifasciata--but the red turquoise and pigeon bloods are hybrids that are very far removed from wild discus.

To get wild discus, the best place is at the GCAC swap meet--the next one is March 2. I've also gotten wild greens and blues imported from Peru froma dealer in the suburbs of Chicago. I would never pay more than $60-75 bucks for large, healthy wild discus. At the swap meet, you can talk guys down to $40 sometimes for each.

From my experience, wild discus that have been properly acclimated to Chicago tap water are far hardier than any store-bought domestic discus and can be pretty aggressive at feeding time. If they look a little beat up or not very colorful, it might be because they are still damaged from being netted and sent all the way here. Once in your tank, they should do fine if you keep a clean tank and feed them well.

A lot of problems come with wild caught discus as well - they're ridden with internal parasites and usually need a round of metro along with a formalin dip before they're going to be sold.

Generally, in my experience, the domestic strains go for a lot more then the wild types. Especially if you go through breeders that deal in Grade A-AAA discus.
