probably somewhat resembled it because the fish is deceivingly small...i doubt many on here have actually seen a shortnose at that stage.

richard, the little spot is looking great! nice pic with the "holotype" gar too...i need to get mine organized and posted sometime soon!--

This thread has a juvie Platostomus, although it doesn't appear to be quite as small as the Oculatus pictured above...

BTW...the wild spotteds seem to have so much more color and pattern than the captive Florida/Spotteds in the hobby. I really want a wild Spotted now!

The Short I have from Wisconsin I initially got at under 1 inch.. It looked no different than a longnosed until it reached about 2 inches. In fact I assumed it was a longnosed and almost vouchered it rather than raise it. Two of it's siblings went right into the alcohol.. I still can not find a difference between them that sticks out enough to be diagnostic. As such I never got photos of it at that small size.

Had to do that one..... :)
Little gar BTW has now officially grown fins.. Eats live brine and daphnia like no tomorrow, snout has grown significantly and has grown from 20.63mm to 29.81mm in just under two weeks.. It is "spot" on with the morphologic and growth data previously published.

I should note: We have no data that the colours that are found in the wild will remain in captivity. Only a very few known spotted gars have been tracked in captivity and none of them look much like the wild fish..
