Would quinine be toxic to fish if I put it in a pond? the only reason I ask is that it would be really cool to set up a black light at night and what your pond glow, especially the waterfall. We drink it in tonic water so why not put it in a pond?

for those of you who are scratching your heads:

Im not 100% sure but I think that prolonged exposure to "black lights" can blind your fish.

I wouldnt have it on all the time, just when I wanted to see my pond glow. This is just an off hand idea so nobody take it very seriously. I am just curious. I think quinine is made out of some kind of tree bark so I am wildly guessing that it would be ok in a pond.

Ive actually tried it on my old 220g (no ill effects) i had the black light shining up from underneath the tank and thru the gravel. looked pretty nice at night, but i read somewhere that the light could blind the fish, so i discontinued. not sure about the quinine though.

Quinine was first isolated from the bark of a south american tree, can't remember what the use was- maybe as an anesthetic used by the natives. More recently is synthetically made into antimalarial antibiotic/antiparasitic. In humans it can be fairly toxic by causing a varirty of blood ailments and less commonly liver inflammation. I don't believe fish are much different. Thus, use it sparingly and not frequently.

sounds pretty damn trippy to have a glowing pond...take pics if you decide to try it and let us know what happens (ill affects if any)
