Question. There is an opportunity to get small ornate polypterus from a reputable lfs. Will there be any difference in these versus captive breds?

Just a question as I've owned two 14-15" and a 19" ornate without knowing their origin I've seen 7-8" fir $25 and believe them to be captive breds. I presume these are just older mature ornately. Faster growth and better markings and larger max sizes? Attached is a screenshot. Opinion please. Thank u.

Wild caughts get a little bigger than captive breds. Most times wild caught have better patterns also but I have a CB ornate with a good pattern. She's a very slow grower, my friends wild caught grew quite fast like my endlicheri. I got mine from them so I'd give go for it. Their pretty legit, I got my ornate at 3 inches 4 or 5 months ago and it's about 7 1/2

Wetspot is great dealt with them many times. Interesting to see if anyone has a pic of a wild ornate vs cb
 
Is it just me but captive bred ornates still look great. Almost as if they're immune to the typical CB defects such as bug eyes, small heads, poor markings, short bodies, etc.. that normally occur with endli and lap species. How about a stunted one? Genetically strong specie? Think about it. Have you seen a defective physical trait on an ornate before? I haven't. What are your thoughts?
 
Havent been keeping polys long but i assume mine is cb and is growing far faster than any of the other polys. My stock isnt as vast as others though
 
I've kept both wc and CB ornates and the cb's are much brighter whereas all the wc's I've had were pretty dull looking and the wc's grow so slowly! I've had 4 wc's that took over a year just to grow from 7-12" and I had a CB I got at 1" and in 6 months it grew to 12"
 
For me there all the same. I had far to many wc ornate's. Imo ivans answer is pretty much accurate. Cb get alot thicker then wc's which stay more slender. As coloration. there both identical. just how the finlets look and tail.
 
What about defects due to massive captive breeding? Does this occur with ornates? Just curious because I've never seen these traits unlike other poly species.
