I have 4 JD's 2 EBJD and 2 BGJD's I was pretty sure that 1 of the EBJD's was a female and that both BGJD's are female but today the female looking EBJD and 1 of the BGJD's were doing the mating dance ( not sure what to call it) but they were swooning against each other and then would lip lock then swooning and then the small one got scared away by another fish. So would 2 females even display these signs of mating???????
thanks

Male or female EBJD

Two females cant, by design, mate, you know that. However, certain species of African cichlids,(Melanochromis Auratus) can and actually do, change sex in an all male or all female environment. I dont think EBJD can morph though. You will almost certainly get displays resembling mating ritual in the quest to establish hierarchy. Females can be just as aggresive in this as males.

True about establishing hierarchy, and my females are more aggressive than my male. But I've had these fish for almost a year and have never seen this from these 2! the smaller female usaully just chases the bigger one around the tank till he/she is in the top corner, hense the bitten tail on the EBJD. Guess I'll have to watch them.
thanks

Two females obviously cannot mate, and JDs will not change gender...

It is not uncommon for two females to "go through the motions" of mating...

I'm not sure what criteria you are using to sex that Blue Dempsey, but having bred several female Blues personally, I see no reason to suspect it is female.

Nc nutcase could you please look at my other post, I will bump it to the top I have pics of the vents on my fish and let me know what you think?

thanks
