ok i might get this filter for my birthday but i was wondering if its to much filtration..i have polys in the tank to grow them out so the tank gets pretty dirty..will this filter be ok on the tank...and what is a good website to get it...thanks

Definitely not too much. In fact id reccomend a powerhead to provide additional current and aeration. Its a great filter for bio but they dont have a ton of turnover for a 55 (advertised at 264 as I recall so cut that number in half)
If you want a completely clean tank mechanically id say add an ac70 or ac110 as well for the turnover and mechanical filtration.
These are great solid filters I have 5 eheim classics now and they rule. The only place they lack in is the flow.

I have one on my 75 gallon tank. It's a great filter, tons of room for media, but the flow rate isn't that high so it works great with additional filtration. I'd say it would work good on a 55 with another filter or a power head.
