Will a female festae color up with no male?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its a toss up, depending on her feeling of dominance.
Sometimes alone, festae, or many other cichlids won't show the same brilliant coloration they would if in a pair, or shoaling situation.
Here is a shot of a female festae I had, without a male in the tank.

below same female with a male in the tank.

I have seen them color up with no male present, but as Duane stated this depends on a lot of factors, especially the fishes dominance. IMO, this is not a species I would choose for a solo wet pet. Some can be very skittish and hide a lot when young.

Thanks for the feedback. I am torn between a few species and have heard some.similar reports about being skittish.

Not something I think I will go for. Thanks guys
Is this for a new tank?
