Sounds funny right?

I've found a baby Rainbow Boa for £95 at the local exotic store. It's tame and looks great, and is apparently feeding well.

On telling my mum about it (this will be my first snake, although I keep turtles and a lizard already), she somehow jumped from "Rainbow Boa" to "Boa Constrictor", which to me isn't very fair. She now thinks that if it escapes, it poses a threat because it might coil around my neck in my sleep and suffocate me. She doesn't want to listen to me, so I need other people's opinions to show her.

Can someone disprove this belief?

I've heard rainbow boas aren't good first snakes.

I doubt it.
I can't really imagine any snake thats not absolutly massive attacking a person unprovoked. Especially a snake wrapping purposly around someones neck. Snakes just arn't like that.
Im pretty sure if it WAS around your neck you'd be able to unwrap it.

Why don't they make good first snakes? They don't get that big according to the stuff I've read on the internet :S I've held it and it's pretty tame, so there are no aggression issues. I know they need humidity, but I have cared for tree frogs before so I doubt that will be a problem for me...

And concerning Ball Pythons; I held those too today, but I've heard they can be pretty annoying about food, I've heard of several stopping eating. I wanted something a bit more unusual aswell, not a normal phase ball python, if that makes sense.

They can get to 6ft+, and balls are fine to feed ive had mine for 4 months and only missed 1 feed, and it gets fed twice weekly.

Balls just don't seem my thing [excuse the pun].

Maybe you're right, it's not a good idea to start with a Rainbow Boa.

I might just do the beginner thing and get a corn snake. Here's another dilemma for you.
One store has a pretty nice looking "Sunglow" Corn for £85.
The store with the Boa has "Sunglow" Corns, and nicer looking "Snow" Corns for £65.
The only difference is that the £65 are a bit more jumpy, and not tame.
All are just hatchlings. What kind of damage will a baby corn do? The owner said "They're so small they'll probably bounce right back off ya," but he would say that.

Sorry if I got a bit wound up in the hype of wanting the RB.

if a baby corn bites you, you don't even feel it. lol

Boa constrictors are not dangerous either.

Really, the only cause for concern with them is if you get a big one like a Reticulated, Burmese, Anaconda, Scrub Python, and so on since feeding accidents have and had occured with them and they are big enough to take down a man; however they are not big enough to eat a man.

I don't think there is even one reported death from a Boa constrictor in North America anyway...
