Hello All,

I'm about to head down to the local building supply shop to pick up some slate for my new tank 150.
But my questions is, will any type of slate tile work? There are so many different varieties.
I just want to make sure nothing toxic gets into the water.

your opinion is my appreciated.

Thank you
!

What do you want to use them for caves? If so I'd go to your local landscape supply usually you can get over 100 lbs for less than 10 dollars. If not I imagine any tile would be fine.

Yes, I want to use them for caves. The reason I said tile, was because the building supply shop website had tiles when I was searching for slate. But I just called and they have the slate rock for about .20 per lb. But are their different varieties of slate? Are all ok for aquarium?

Thank you again adixon816

I used a blue slate and its been going over a year no issue I think any slate is fine as long as you rinse it first. I never boiled or anything just rinsed and scrubbed. You may want to shop around a bit I paid $.11 cents a pound.

Got it... Thanks!!!!

I think almost any slate should be fine. For an african cichlid tank about the only concern(other than contamination) would be metallic deposits that could dissolve.
