missouri
I have a 72" long, 48" deep, 400ish gal tank, ready for fish, no fish in it right now. I found a 7-8" silver aruana. I want to also raise 3 RTC (Redtail Catfish) in the same tank. (They will be moved to seperate tanks when it is time). I am not sure what the aruana is currently eating. I have not purchased it, yet.

My problem, I can only find RTC babies, no larger than 4". So I am concerened the aruana might eat, or try eat them. But I am also thinking, maybe not with the tank being 48" deep. The RTC may hang to the bottom & the aruana stay at the surface?

I like the idea of the aruana being larger, so the cats are slightly less likely to eat it later on. Yes, I have had a RTC eat laeger aruana.

I am constantly checking all the LFS, no one seems to be able to come up with 5" or bigger RTC.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your help.

i think you'll be fine. then the RTC will get bigger than your aro and eat it in a month or two lol.

what part of missouri you from?

should be fine and i was confused at first of what an "aruana" was. the correct spelling is in the discussion title. just fyi....arowana lol good luck

I thought about the spelling of it, then went back and double checked. I have a couple of reference books here that spell it aruana. One of them is the Manual of Tank Busters, by Sanford & Crow. Good book on keeping beast fish. Thanks for the input.

the official English name is arowana! you should throw that book in the trash can if they don't have any other name in it!

I'd be more concerned with the RTC eating the Aro. My 20" Jardini almost killed my 24" RTC. I don't think silvers are any problem though.
