Do ya'll think that a couple of banjo catfishes will be fine in a bare bottom tank for a few months?

I've had an outbreak of something awful, it's like this slimy stuff that may or may not be algae... it's ridiculously hard to kill. I've stripped my tank down and am setting it back up as though it is a quarantine and the sand has gone out with the other stuff. Will this lack of substrate stress my banjos too much or will they be fine? I might keep them like this for 6 months to make sure that stuff is gone. Thoughts, suggestions? Feel free to give essays worth of advice if you like.

I'd try to provide some sort of shelter like flat rocks with spaces over the bottom, pvc tubes, etc to give each of them a place to hide. Not having anything might impact their feeding habits, aggressiveness or health. Long term, a leaf or sandy substrate would probably be my choice. I love fish that use the substrate, so not having substrate partially defeats the purpose for having the fish.

Just will not see their behavior of burying themselves mainly. Keep a few together for company.
