the local petco has some oddball CLs that are just under an inch and i want to get them is my big 5" cl wont eat them.

There was a thread a while back where someone's big clown loaches ate his smaller clown loaches so it's possible. And smaller clown loaches would have a harder time competing for food with the bigger ones so I would grow out the smaller ones first before putting them in with the bigger ones.

It would be rare, but I try to keep the big ones and the small ones separate.

i think i will keep the smaller ones in the in-tank refugium if the holes arent too big

I don't really go by the book, but I have never had any problems with different sized loaches together. My bigger ones don't really pay attention to the smaller ones. This may be due to the size of my tank, the hiding spaces, or just the quantity of loaches...I am not sure.

could happen but i've seen loaches around 6''-7'' with 1''-2'' so it should be fine
