I am thinking of switching my 156 gallon Central American cichlid tank to a brackish water set up. I see that brackish fish eat frozen food, feeders, shrimp with no problem. I am often away on weekends and use a automatic feeder with pellets and flake. Bottom line, will brackish water fish readily eat pellets and flake or any other kind of dried food?

what fish are you looking at is the most important question. but as long as they are not a type of fish that requires meaty foods in their diet i dont see why they wouldnt be fine on pellets and flakes for a few days. if marine fish will eat flakes i dont see why they wouldnt eat them, unless like i said they are a fish that eats only meaty foods.

Most gobies will. But it's always best to vary a fish's diet with meaty foods too. Forget about feeders.

yes i dont think i know of a bracish fish that cant be feed pellets(i know some salt water fish that cant but not brackish)

the only thing is you will have to wean them on it from the tastier live and frozen food, some fish move on easier then others.

Most fish can easily go the weekend w/o food. It's actually recommended to skip at least 1 day/week for fasting, for better digestion.

I have archers, gobies, red chromides, crazy fish, a mono, a scat, and zebra blennies all eating flake/pellet/freeze dried blood worms and brine shrimp.

They also get frozen brine, bloodworms, and/or krill once or twice a week, and live occasionally, but they don't hesitate at all for the dry food which is their main diet.

I was feeding mainly live and frozen initially but my tank got dirty so fast I slowly switched everythign over to mostly dry fods.

Okay I got my answer this week. I bought 3 4" Silver Scats and 3 3" Mono Argentus last Saturday. So far they eat anything and everything I drop in the tank like crazy. The Mono's go nuts when they eat. They eat pellets, flake, any frozen, etc.

Man, I hope you have a HUGE tank! That's a ton of bioload to add all at once--I hope it was cycled well.... Eventually growing into a minimum of a 300g.

my clumbian sharks eat Hikari sinking cichlid pellets in brackish water and now in full salt water.. no problems.
