I am Going to change out the foam blocks out in my fluval fx5. i know that the bb live in foam blocks but i also have ceramic rings in one of the trays. if i change all of the foam at once, will this cause the tank to go through a cycle again. i am leaning toward just changing out one tray at a time so i can lake a minimal impact on the bb colony that i have. i am having a small problem with some cloudy water right now but am at a loss on how to fix this. the filter has been up and running for a month or two now and my PPM for everything is zero so i know that the cycle is complete. Now, i know that changing the coarse pads on the outside of the baskets are not going to take down on cloudyness but i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to combat this problem. I am thinking about trying out some purigen. What do you guys think?

If your tank is heavily stocked with fish and this is the only filter, I'd only change out 1/2 of the sponges at a time.

How long has the tank been set up? It is unusual to have a Nitrate reading of zero on a fully cycled aquarium.

There are 3 common water metrics. Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates. If all 3 are at zero, you aren't cycled. If the first 2 are at zero and the third is measurable, you are cycled.

Having said that, you should never change out too large a large proportion of your filter material all at once. Changing 50% should be okay, but make sure you let the 'new' 50% have time to be fully seeded before you swap it out the older material as well.

I really have not measured the nitrate. the only kit i have right now is the ammonia test. It seems like every time i go to the lfs they are out of half there stock. the tank has a lmb about 10" or so long maybe a little larger, and a florida gar about the same size. the tank is a 130gal. it has been set up with this filter for about two months. the whole tank has been set up for 6 months or so.

Drstrange hit it on the head.

Try adding a tad more bio media so you know most of your bb is safely house inside the bio, that way next time you won't have to worry.

Also I've been researching lately and you can buy smaller ppi sponges for the fx5 online making it better at mechanical filtration.

do you know were i can find them? the blocks that are in there now are so coarse they dont catch anything. Anyone have any ideas for the water cloudyness problem?

ok i went and got a nitrate nitrite test kit and my ammonia is at 0, no2 is 0 and my no3 is 40ppm. It looks like to me the tank is cycled. I cant figure out for the life of me why my water is still cloudy. any ideas?
