I got 3 baby electric blue haps at a wholesaler. The guy said they were all males, but only 2 have turned blue. I don't want to breed them. I have also heard that sometimes the males attack the female. Will it be an issue? They are currently in a 40 breeder, but I am going to move them to a 55 when they get larger.

they can be aggressive to each other males will attack each other more so than a male and female If your not going to breed I would just keep the nicest one and get an all male hap tank try to get other haps that dont look alike. No females unless breeding them. Once a female is added all hell breaks loose.

It could be a male who is afraid to color up because he is with the other males. Three males is also a problem...either with fighting or lack of coloration or both.

3 males probably aren't going to coexist, I would 2 of them. Can you trade them in at the store for something else?

I agree (especially in a small tank like a 40 breeder) the most alpha of the males will color up, and the others not so much. In a larger tank you'd have much more change of the others getting color, and a better chance they won't kill each other, a 55 would help, and if it has other fish, they might be a distraction, although even a 55 is quite small.
Although it may be thought to be a rule, the "others won't color up" is not set in stone. In my 125 gal I had 2 male Nimbochromis color up, and coexist, although at times it was tenuous, because there were also 2 females in the tank.
