I posted a thread will they bond 2/27, well when I went to give them a snack to eat noticed the female hovering over a small pit with very small wrigglers. My question is it rare for the fry to be born with the EB gene if both parents are that strain.:)

I'm sorry but j don't know much about genetics. I'm sure Pete can answer.

I would assume they would. The EB gene has to be recessive and the odds are greater when both parents have the recessive gene....but breeders use EB gene regular females to create this strain so I'm missing something.

Oh ok similar situation with Electric Blue Jack Dempsey.

They would likely be using Heterozygous for EB females if they are using a visual recessive male and getting EB offspring from normal-looking females.

tlindsey tlindsey the chances are good that the color won't develop until a later age/size. A few may be "normal" visually, but 2 EB-parents should yield close to 100% EB fry. The ones who aren't visual EB will still be 100% heterozygous for EB, in other words they are "guaranteed" to carry the allele responsible for producing EB. They simply need to be bred to another Het. for EB or better yet, a visual recessive EB.

This should help a little:

Which species are we talking about? Electric blue rams and acaras breed 100% true if both parents are electric blue. It's my understanding that Jack Dempsey do not.

Oh totally forgot to state that they are Electric Blue Acara's.:) Thanks ryansmith83 ryansmith83

EB acaras and EB rams are fertile - you get 100% EB fry if both parents are EB. They are fairly robust and look/eat/grow/breed like their wild type counter parts except being EB.

EBJDs can not be bred from EB parents. It's an interesting genetic problem/question, but EB pairs do not produce viable fry. At least one parent has to be so-called blue gene JD (i.e. heterozygous for the eb gene and appearing as wild type).
