im still trying to find a middle dewller for my 29 gallon planted african community. it currently is housing a 4 inch elephant nose(wich is now eating like a pig):clap , and a baby ornate:D . i plan on housing the ornate in there till hes bout 10-12 inches and was wondering what size fish would he actually be able to eat. would congo tetras become lunch?? how many inches should prospective tankmates reach? how bout tiger barbs? i pretty much ruled out the bushfish, as they would compete with both my current fish for bottom space.

heres da plan:

(1) Ornate Bichir
(1) Elephant Nose
(1) African Butterfly

(3-4) mid dwelling fish ?suggestions?:naughty:

thnx for all your "expert" advice, cant wait till i have enuff time and money under my belt to join the ranks of monster fish keepers everywere!:headbang2

Not for a 29 gallon tank with an ornate and an elephant nose sorry-Anne

anne, was your post a reply to Ewurm or me. the bichir is a temporary deal, hes moving into a 150-190 gallon in november;) , before the bichir will even be 7 inches (from my research neways), and way before the elephant will reach any kind of competetive size. also i dont see how the dimensions of my tank cause any issues with over crowding either but forgive me if im wrong, isnt 3 times the lenght of a fish the recommended size of length for a tank as well as 1.5 times the depth:confused: , wich my tank provides for both the nose and the bichir(until the bichir's new tank of course). thus the biggest fish ever in that tank will be 9 inches (if that). so why the blatent no?:confused:

it may seem like im exploding in your face but i am just a little confused and perhaps very naive as to what i speak of.:(

I don't think anne knows you're getting a larger tank in november since you didn't mention it on your original post. If you're looking for an african theme then probably a few leopard ctenopoma in there would be good mid dwellers. They grow pretty slow though so take that into account when adding them into your tank.

i fed the nose frozen bloodworms till the bichir almost killed it and i was forced to return it

The bold terms above REALLY don't match, IMHO. The SDs are gonna turn a planted tank in a salad bar real soon... And are NOT african. And both suggestions don't belong to the 29 G world. :grinno:

:iagree: Leopard ctenopoma are a good choice. I'd go with the following:

- 1 elephant nose (this tank can't hold 5 of them);
- 1 african butterfly fish;
- 1 leopard ctenopoma;
- 5 Congo tetras.

The bichir doesn't belong to a 29 G tank, as you already know. :grinno:

What is IT? The bichir or the elephant nose? Seems this refers to the elephant nose... Am I right? I don't think this was the smartest move, since you had a fish that could be kept in this tank for a long time and a good-eating specimen of a finicky eater species. You already knew that the bichir can't stay in this tank for long. :grinno:

Best regards.

Daniel.

yes it was the nose i was forced to return, and yes the bichir cant live in the 29 forverer. i debated with myself over this descison and decided that the bichir will outlive the nose, is much more of a pet-like fish, and came first. but i can get another nose after he is moved into his new abode (only 5 more months :headbang2 :naughty: :headbang2 ). right now the bichir is the fish that all plans reveolve around, until november when he moves tho the next stage of his growout :thumbsup:

my current tank status has changed and it is now containing

(1) African B-Fly
(1) L-200 Plec
(1) Baby Ornate
oh ya and theres 3 little temporary ottos in there ;) bichir food and clean up crew ( the l-200 prefers bloodworms and zuchini over algea)

could i still ad the congo tetras?
